Simple Home Food and Water Preparedness Plan

Being prepared isn’t about panic or “doomsday” thinking. It’s about removing stress when something predictable happens: a power cut, supply disruption, illness, bad weather, or cashflow timing.

A basic stash buys you time, keeps decision-making clear, and prevents expensive last-minute shopping. The aim here is simple: shelf-stable food you can eat with minimal effort, plus enough drinking water to ride out problems.

Water (Drinking)

  • Stored water: 100 litres in sealed food-grade containers, kept cool and dark.
  • Daily drinking allowance: 2–3 litres per person.
  • Coverage (one person): ~33 days at 3 L/day (more if rationed).
  • Rotation: replace yearly (or earlier if you open a container).
  • Collapsible soft wall "camping" water container to fill at disaster outset.

Food Targets

Baseline daily intake (no cooking required):

  • 2 canned ready meals (Compass-style)
  • 1 can of fruit cocktail in juice
  • 1 can of fish (sardines or tuna)
  • Optional extras: canned meatballs 2–3 times per week (for variety/protein)

Build Phase (First 3 Months, No Rotation Yet)

Buy the following each month for 3 months to establish the stash:

  • Compass ready meals: 30 cans/month
  • Fish: 12 cans/month
  • Fruit cocktail: 12 cans/month
  • Chicken meatballs: 12 cans/month

After 3 months you will have:

  • Compass: 90 cans
  • Fish: 36 cans
  • Fruit: 36 cans
  • Meatballs: 36 cans

Rotation Phase (Once Started)

To rotate stock without constantly thinking about it, run a single weekly “rotation day” where you eat from stores and then replace what you used at the end of the month. Your normal rotation day uses:

  • 2 Compass
  • 1 Fruit cocktail
  • 1 Fish
  • 1 Meatballs

You can eat other food as well from your normal cupboards on these days!!! Your not in "disaster mode" yet!

Planned cadence: after the initial build, rotate on a bi-monthly basis (one rotation day every two months), then replace the same items.

Monthly Buy Breakdown (Quantities Only)

Item Monthly Buy (Full) Monthly Buy (Half)
Compass ready meals 30 cans 15 cans
Fish (sardines/tuna) 12 cans 6 cans
Fruit cocktail in juice 12 cans 6 cans
Chicken meatballs 12 cans 6 cans

Cost Split (Using the Pack Prices Used for This Plan)

These totals use the pack prices the plan was built from (Compass £22/10, Fish £25/12, Fruit £15/12, Meatballs £12/12).

Item Full Monthly Buy Half Monthly Buy
Compass ready meals £66 (30 cans) £33 (15 cans)
Fish (sardines/tuna) £25 (12 cans) £12.50 (6 cans)
Fruit cocktail in juice £15 (12 cans) £7.50 (6 cans)
Chicken meatballs £12 (12 cans) £6 (6 cans)
Total £118/month £59/month

This is deliberately simple: buy a small amount consistently, build a buffer, then rotate with one planned “use and replace” day. No fancy systems, no stress, and it quietly keeps you covered.
